Kaupapa Mãori

Kaupapa Mãori is a frame of mind and way of working that is built on a Mãori world-view. Kaupapa Mãori treatment is concerned with whãnau ora, not just symptom relief or management. It recognises that culture and cultural experiences are crucial to the development and maintenance of good health, and brings together the elements of wairua (spiritual), hinengaro (mental and emotional), whãnau (family) and tinana (physical). Ideally kaupapa Mãori services are developed, delivered and evaluated by Mãori, supported by kaumãtua and mandated by manawhenua/iwi kainga.

People from other cultures may choose to access these services. Treatment is provided in a range of settings and in ways that acknowledge and respond to the variety of experiences of contemporary Mãori.

If you would like to discuss anything about any of these types of treatments, the alcohol drug helpline Mãori line (0800 787 798) offers free confidential information, help and support.  Or text us by texting adh to 234 and we will text you back to see how we can help.
